Carter BloodCare names Dr. Barbara Bryant as new CEO

Dr. Merlyn Sayers to retire after nearly 30 years of leadership with Texas blood center

DALLAS-FORT WORTH – July 17, 2024 – Carter BloodCare has announced the retirement of Dr. Merlyn Sayers as president and CEO and named Dr. Barbara Bryant as incoming CEO.

Sayers, a physician with more than 40 years of experience in blood banking, began his role at Carter BloodCare in 1996. During Sayers’ service as CEO, Carter BloodCare has grown to become one of the largest blood centers in Texas, supporting transfusion-dependent patients in more than 200 North, Central and East Texas hospitals and medical facilities.

Bryant will step into her new role with Carter BloodCare on Sept. 23, 2024.

She previously served as Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President at Versiti, a national leader in both blood banking and transfusion medicine research.

Her prior experience includes appointment as Chief, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Center for Cellular Engineering, at the National Institutes of Health. In addition, Bryant has held faculty positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She is widely published and serves on a number of international, national and regional committees involved in blood banking accreditation, teaching, research and patient management.
